Get to know Idaho Potato Commission President and CEO, Jamey Higham!
Where are you from?
I grew up in Shelley, Idaho, a small town in Eastern Idaho. Eastern Idaho is where most of Idaho’s 13 billion pounds of potatoes are grown. Potatoes were a big part of my life growing up. In fact, my high school mascot is a russet potato.
Where did you go to college?
I studied Political Science at BYU in Provo Utah. I also received my MBA in International Marketing from Thunderbird School of Global Management in Tempe, AZ.
Tell us about your potato experience?
Being born and raised in what many refer to as “potato country,” potatoes have played a big role in my life. The schools I attended growing up still let school out for two weeks in the fall for potato harvest (K-12). After college I moved back to Idaho and worked in the industry for 25 years, primarily in sales, marketing, and shipping. I also spent 5 years working for Ford Motor Company corporate in their marketing and sales division. I’ve been fortunate to work with a great group of people who are committed to growing the highest quality potatoes in the country.
What are you most looking forward to as President and CEO of the Idaho Potato Commission?
The IPC has done a great job of making the Idaho potato brand one of the most respected and well-known brands in the world. I’m looking forward to working closely with the growers, shippers and processors to strengthen the brand, develop unique and engaging marketing programs and make sure Idaho potatoes remain synonymous with quality. Plus, it’s great to be back home!
What's your favorite way to eat a potato?
Baked with butter and sour cream; French fries are a close second.
What do you like to do in your free time?
I enjoy the outdoors, travel, and watching my kids in their activities. I also can’t resist a good book or movie.
Established in 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) is a state agency that is responsible for promoting and protecting the famous "Grown in Idaho®" seal, a federally registered trademark that assures consumers they are purchasing genuine, top-quality Idaho® potatoes. Idaho's ideal growing conditions, including rich, volcanic soil, climate and irrigation differentiate Idaho® potatoes from potatoes grown in other states.
