In Recognition of National Pet Month… New Idaho® Potato Recipes for Your Pup
Homemade dog food, like Idaho® Potato Cottage Pie is a great way to make sure your best friend is eating well!
EAGLE, ID, May 12, 2022 – Wholesome Idaho potatoes are healthy for the entire family…including the pups. With more and more folks opting to prepare their pooch’s meals at home, the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) has created a collection of recipes just for our furry friends.
Preparing your dog’s food has many benefits including managing your canine’s diet, having greater control over what they’re ingesting and helping appease a picky eater. Idaho potatoes, when fully cooked, are a great food to add to Fido’s home-cooked meals.
Idaho® Potato Cottage Pie is made with the same ingredients you find in Shepherd’s Pie, a favorite among humans. The big difference is the potato preparation. Keep the potatoes clean – no added butter or cream, which are too calorically dense for dogs.
Idaho® Potato Cottage Pie
Yield: 6 patties
Ingredients
● 2 large russet Idaho potatoes, cleaned, peeled and diced
● 1 tablespoon oil (vegetable or canola)
● 1 pound ground beef
● 2 large carrots
● ½ cup green peas, shelled
● 1 cup mild cheddar cheese, shredded
● ¼ cup water
Directions
-
In a large pot of boiling water, add the diced potatoes and bring them to a boil. Cook for about 8-10 minutes until potatoes are tender when poked with a knife or fork. Drain, and mash. Add a little water if needed to make the desired consistency. Set aside.
-
In a large skillet over medium heat, heat 1 tablespoon of oil, add the ground beef and cook until browned. Add the carrots and cook for an additional 5 minutes or until tender. Add the green peas and cook another 3-5 minutes. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Drain fat from the mixture.
-
Combine the meat mixture with mashed potatoes and shredded cheese. Mix until well incorporated. If the mixture is too dry to hold together, add water.
-
Use about 1 cup of the mixture to form a hamburger-shaped patty. You should have about 6 patties. Wrap each patty in plastic wrap and keep them in the refrigerator until ready to feed to your pup. When ready, simply crumble the mixture into the serving bowl and let them enjoy!

Note: Raw potatoes contain solanine which can be harmful to dogs, so please fully cook your potatoes before serving them to your pooch. Consult your veterinarian before you make any changes to your pup’s diet.
