Idaho Potato Commission Tater Talk

Welcome to a very special edition of Tater Talk !

Back by popular demand, the Great Big Idaho® Potato Truck is once again on a seven-month journey across the country. It will visit 72 cities in 28 states and meet hundreds of thousands of fans along the way to help raise funds and awareness for Meals On Wheels, a nonprofit organization that delivers more than one million meals each day to homebound seniors.

The 2013 Tour kicked off in late March in Emmett, Idaho, with support and good wishes from Governor C.L. "Butch" Otter and several hundred local residents. The Truck traveled across the country to make its first major appearance at the Supervalu Produce and Floral Expo in Monroeville, Pa. And after a brief stop at That Pierogi Place in Johnstown, Pa., the world's largest potato visited the Big Apple.

NYC residents "ate up" the giant spud! Local food truck Mike 'n Willie's wrapped itself to look like the Truck and gave away free Idaho® fries with every purchase of one of their famous sliders. Media coverage in The Wall Street Journal, on NY1, New York's up-to-the-minute cable program, and in Newsday generated some healthy buzz about the spectacular spud.

In addition to supporting Meals On Wheels, the Truck is also helping remind folks of the potato's impressive nutritional profile. With the recognized and well-respected American Heart Association Heart-Check Mark prominently displayed on the side panels, the Truck made a special appearance at the U.S. Department of Agriculture's headquarters in Washington, D.C., to remind influencers of the important place potatoes have on school breakfast and lunch menus.

The Truck is only two months into its tour and has a long list of exciting places it plans to visit this season, including:

  • College Baseball World Series in Omaha, Nebraska
  • National Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio
  • NASCAR at Bristol Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee
  • NASA Space Center in Houston, Texas
  • The World’s Largest Catsup Bottle in Collinsville, Illinois
